What does Torindo focus on in its selection process?
While language skills and academic expertise are no doubt important, we focus more on whether candidates will be able to take the initiative in their work and whether they have a positive attitude toward learning things that they do not know. Torindo’s translation coordinators take charge of projects by working together with various people inside and outside the company, including communicating with clients and coordinating with translators and proofreaders. For that reason, we look for and welcome candidates who are able to handle correspondence with care and integrity, and who have the ability to move projects forward while overseeing entire projects—qualities that are important for the work of a translation coordinator.
What sort of backgrounds do Torindo employees have?
Torindo employees come from a variety of backgrounds, with both employees who have majored in sciences and in humanities. Employees who have majored in sciences/engineering often apply their specialized knowledge in jobs involving technical documents, while employees who have majored in humanities/languages/international relations take the lead in multilingual projects. One thing common between all our employees is that they all have a passion for connecting with people through languages while working on multiple tasks simultaneously.
What sort of skills are useful for the position of translation coordinator?
In addition to language skills, translation coordinators are expected to have the ability to multitask and manage multiple projects concurrently, to be able to coordinate schedules and determine risks, and to have the capability to smoothly communicate with people inside and outside the company. For instance, translation coordinators have to handle several projects with differing deadlines and language pairs concurrently, assigning translators and proofreaders appropriate for each project while also dealing flexibly with any deadline changes or other problems that may occur. Another crucial skill is the ability to work with various stakeholders in order to make progress on projects. Our coordinators must be able to identify client needs through e-mail correspondence and meetings with them, and to share this information with their fellow team members and form concrete plans from this information.
Can I visit to have a chat with any alumni of my university or to have a casual interview before starting the formal selection process?
Yes, we are able to arrange such sessions as required. We can arrange for these sessions to be in-person or online, so feel free to let us know your preference and desired dates. Based on your request, we will schedule a session with an appropriate employee. Please feel free to send us an inquiry.
Other than working on translation-related tasks, will I be able to gain work experience in overall project management?
Yes, Torindo’s translation coordinators do not simply proofread translations and manage progress, they are also involved in the overall planning and managing of projects, including communicating with clients, scheduling deadlines, and working with translators, proofreaders, and DTP operators. The position of translation coordinator is one that, with translation expertise as a foundation, will allow you to develop the capability to handle tasks with a broad perspective, working together with stakeholders and taking charge of the process to provide clients with optimal results.
What sort of career path lies in the future for a translation coordinator?
Upon building experience as a translation coordinator, you will be able to take charge of projects with more advanced subject matters, and to move a step up to taking on the role of overseeing multiple projects. In addition, leveraging on the proposal and decision making skills you will build in the course of working with clients, you may be able to become a team leader and become a part of management.
Is a system and work environment in place that will allow me to develop skills with peace of mind even if I do not have any experience?
Yes. Torindo conducts New Employee Training sessions where, upon joining the company, you will learn about the company’s structure and systems, and gain basic knowledge on the translation industry. After these training sessions, a senior employee will be your on-the-job (OJT) trainer, and they will guide you through translation and proofreading practice projects, and eventually helping them and other employees on actual projects. Over this OJT period of around half a year to one year, you will build experience and learn the various tasks required of you in structured stages. Starting with learning how to use various translation and proofreading tools, your curriculum will gradually expand to include a wider range of tasks, allowing you to grow with consistency.
Does Torindo have maternity leave and childcare leave systems in place?
We have maternity leave and childcare leave systems established based on Japanese laws, and our current rate of eligible employees taking maternity/childcare leave and returning to their jobs after their leave both stands at 100%. Torindo has a workplace environment where you can continue working in the long run with peace of mind.
